You may be with other people, share experiences, enjoy one another’s company, celebrate and empathize with each other. But the primary experience of humanity is individual and solitary. At the end of the night as you approach sleep you return alone to the present, to your thoughts, to your solitary existence. Being alone allows thought, clarity, and insight to form. There can be great and deep rewards from a life or even an hour of solitude.

Although you are an integral part of the whole, you function as an independent organism. Solitude allows the mind to relax into itself and fosters self-reliance. Living requires solitude in varying quantities. The quality and value of solitude is defined by your experience and interpretation. You choose your own adventure. The life of solitude does not preclude involvement with and love for others. A chosen life of solitude allows for your being to develop and experience life uniquely and at its own speed.

Time dedicated to solitude allows life to stretch out to the point where time is no longer relevant. There arises a space around activities and events, around the experience of life itself. Spending time alone allows for presence to arise.

You have the opportunity to share yourself with others but solitude is as valuable as social interaction. There is value in quiet time alone. Embrace your independence and individuality. Revel in solitude but never forget you are an integral part of the whole.
